The PMD-LIFE LINE device is a robust mechanical system mated to an FDA-approved ventilator circuit. The PMDLIFE LINE system is a mechanically-actuated ventilation device based on a conventional bag valve mask (BVM) that is connected in-line to an end tracheal tube (ETT). This device is designed to provide controlled minute ventilation to an incubated patient utilizing standard FDA-approved components mated to the PMD-LIFE LINE mechanical apparatus. This design is not intended to replace an FDA-approved ventilator; rather, it is intended to act as a rescue device with an indication for providing emergency ventilation. The mode of ventilation is a volume control system of breath delivery, provided to a paralyzed and sedated patient. The PMD-LIFE LINE device is not intended to be deployed in a non-hospital setting, and it requires the use of supplemental equipment provided by a hospital to achieve full functionality. The PMD-LIFE LINE system can only be safely utilized in a monitored hospital environment, and the operation would be managed by knowledgeable clinical personnel with supportive ancillary services. In tandem with the PMD-LIFE LINE system, traditional sensors available in hospitals could inform clinical decision making. These systems include venous pulse oxymeter, arterial line monitoring, and non-invasive continuous cardiac monitoring. Initial prototypes of the PMD-LIFE LINE device have been fabricated and assembled, and are currently operational and undergoing testing.
